Development of teaching programs
(N.L.Lunina)
In 1986 a computer class on the basis of "YAMAHA" was arranged in Pushchino
Experimental Secondary School. It included 15 computers for students (without
hard disks) and 1 computer for a teacher (with a hard disk) connected into a
local net.
Interest in computers was passionate among schoolchildren. Sometimes over 100
people of different ages were involved in various facultative groups. The
programming language was BASIC. A BASIC-interpreter was built in each student's
computer. But it was very sad to study only BASIC.
We felt need for tutorials that would be accessible to a wide range of pupils.
Clearly, the programs-simulators are very quickly to write. A software tool for
English Language Learning was developed very quickly. In included 5 programs:
"Translation of Words", "Irregular Verbs", "Names Numerals", "Pronouns", "Names
Adjectives". The programs took advantage of reach graphics and musical
opportunities of the machines. For example, if a pupil could not enter a word in
time, a crocodile swallowed it, or Vinny the Pooh broke a pot with honey, or a
ship that moved to a lonely island sank. The tutorials were widely used at
facultative sessions. They were also (though not so frequently) used by
teachers-enthusiasts at the English language lessons. Description of the
programs was published in ONTI SCBR in 1987.
Later on a tutorial on biology was developed which included the most difficult
themes of a graduation class - biosynthesis of proteins and genetics. The
tutorial was published in ONTI SCBR in 1988, 1990, and 1992 in Russian and in
English.
The tutorials were widely used at schools that had "YAMAHA" computer classes.
Once we were in Leningrad at a conference devoted to the use of computers in
training. When we came into a computer class, the first thing that we saw was
our tutorial, though without any references to the organization that produced
it, i.e. the RCC.
